Dharma Discourse by His Holiness
There are many practices associated with Hayagriva, including the Calamity and Illness Eradication Practice, the Enrichment Practice, the Wisdom Enrichment Practice, the Love and Respect Practice, and the Subjugation Practice, among others.
Hayagriva possesses swift dharma powers and is therefore known as the Swift Vajra. Thus, once spiritual union is attained, the effects of his practices manifest very quickly. The manifestation of his dharma powers is characterized by speed.
Q&A
Question from Lotus Jingru
Pay homage to the Most Venerable and Beloved Grandmaster.
Greetings to Grandmaster and Shimu.
I respectfully ask Grandmaster to compassionately explain and clarify some questions concerning the spirit world.
When my father-in-law passed away, one night a large group of beings from the spirit world came to steal his qi. When I discovered this, I immediately recited the Guru Heart Mantra, hoping to prevent the ghosts from stealing the qi.
Unexpectedly, the ghost who was leading the group actually said, “Do you think you are the only one who knows how to recite the Guru Heart Mantra? Let me tell you, we know it too!”
At that moment, nearly twenty or thirty beings from the spirit world all loudly recited, “Om, gu-ru, lian-sheng, sid-dhi, hum.”
I was completely dumbfounded. I thought, “Oh no, even the ghosts know how to recite the Guru Heart Mantra!” Then they all pounced on me and freely stole and sucked my qi. At that moment, I could only let the ghosts do whatever they wanted to me.
I respectfully ask Grandmaster to clarify:
Disciple Lotus Jingru respectfully prostrates 100 times.
His Holiness’s Answer
Everyone can recite a mantra, but what matters is whether they have attained spiritual union. Without spiritual union, the mantra is naturally ineffective. The efficacy of mantra recitation lies fundamentally in the fact that the Root Guru knows and comes to help. As soon as the Root Guru is invoked, the Root Guru arrives.
If a ghost could attain spiritual union, it could no longer be a ghost. Once spiritual union is attained, the being would already be able to proceed to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
His Holiness’s Commentary on the Surangama Sutra, Volume Five
Chudapanthaka rose from his seat, bowed at the Buddha’s feet, and said to the Buddha that in his early days, he simply could not retain anything he heard about the Dharma.
His Holiness mentioned that when he was young, he liked to go out and play and often skipped school. When he reached middle school, he had to repeat a grade twice. He then began to study diligently and became a model student.
Chudapanthaka left home to follow Shakyamuni Buddha, but he could not remember the Dharma taught by the Buddha. Therefore, the Buddha taught Chudapanthaka just one phrase: “Sweeping away dust, removing grime.” Chudapanthaka recited this phrase while wiping the cloth shoes of each monastic. The Buddha also taught Chudapanthaka to count his breaths. As he continued counting, his mind eventually became unified, his mind opened, understanding arose, and all his afflictions disappeared.
Chudapanthaka was able to attain realization because, through observing his breath as it became extremely subtle, he attained the state of emptiness and consequently attained Arhatship. Chudapanthaka answered the Buddha that he attained the state of emptiness by relying on his extremely subtle breathing.
His Holiness said that from this, we can understand that even the most foolish person has the potential to attain Buddhahood.
