【Zashi Lhamo Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
Eyes wide and round, body in yellow hue;Brows tightly furrowed, mouth agape, a red tongue extended.
Wearing a crown of five skulls, with feet like a chicken’s claws;
Both hands held before the chest, grasping the sun and the moon.
The color of Zashi Lhamo is yellow and black, or sometimes blue. In our True Buddha School, the emphasis is on yellow. Why? Because we seek sudden wealth. Her blue aspect reflects the nature of a Dharma Protector, while yellow signifies bestowing blessings. Her two eyes are wide open, her brows tightly knit, her mouth open, with a red tongue extending down to the chin and even to the chest. Upon her head she wears a crown of five skulls, and her feet are like those of a chicken. Her hands are held before her chest, one grasping the sun, the other the moon.
This form demonstrates her powerful ability to intimidate and subdue evil forces. She is a Dharma Protector, but also a Wealth Deity. The most important phrase she embodies is: sudden wealth!
【Living Buddha Liansheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Zashi Lhamo Background and Key Cultivation Formula】
Entering samadhi, one unites with Zashi Lhamo.
One gains health, peace, auspiciousness, fulfillment, and sudden wealth.
Entering samadhi, one sincerely invokes Zashi Lhamo to descend. With single-minded meditation, “one enters the deity, and the deity enters one.” When one is truly spiritually union with Zashi Lhamo, one will certainly obtain health, peace, auspiciousness, fulfillment, and sudden wealth.
Her praise verse:
“Ma-mo-tian-nu-huan-hua-shen, suo-ji-bup-zhi-mo-nu-zun, yi-jie-zhi-mu-luo-sha-nu, gong-cheng-ru-shi-deng-zhu-ming. Ri-zhong-huan-xiao-jin-gang-mu, li-ming-yuan-jing-kong-xing-mu, ye-shi-meng-bao-zi-zai-mu, suo-ji-bu-zhi-cai-fu-zun. Wang-xi-ye-li-yu-yuan-li, jin-shi-cheng-shu-she-yi-shi, yin-yin-lang-lang-hu-huan-zun, yuan-qing-su-ji-jiang-lai-lin.”
(An emanation of the celestial maiden Mamo,
The Venerable Sorji Buzhi Dakini,
The Rakshasi, Mother of the Dharma Realm,
Known collectively by these and other names.
At midday, the joyful Vajra Mother;
At dawn, the Ḍakini of the Perfect Mirror;
At night, the fierce and sovereign Mother;
Sorji Büzhi, the deity of wealth.
Past karmic forces and vows
Now ripen and gather into a single pledge.
With earnest and resounding calls, we invoke the Honored One.
May You swiftly descend and arrive.)
Her heart mantra:
“Om, ma-mo, na-mo, tong-tong, zha-zha, so-ha.”
The more you recite, the better.
The preliminary and concluding practices are the same as in general sadhana
The above instructions describe the main practice: visualization, mantra recitation, and entering samadhi. The preliminaries include the Great Homage, Mandala Offering, the Fourfold Refuges, and the Four Immeasurable Vows. The concluding practices include dedication of merit, praise verses, and the Hundred-Syllable Mantra. Any deficiencies in the practice may be remedied by the recitation of the Hundred-Syllable Mantra.
Three rounds of white liquor are offered;
Mugwort, pine needles, and a white khata,
Together with white flour and various foods, are presented;
Two bright mirrors symbolize the sun and the moon.
Regarding the Mandala Offering, there are some special points about Zashi Lhamo: She particularly enjoys white liquor. Three bottles should be offered, poured in three rounds. One may also offer mugwort, pine needles, and a white khata.
In Tibet, butter tea and tsampa (barley flour) are commonly used, as barley, rather than wheat, is the staple food there. One may instead use white flour, white bread, or general food offerings. During the practice, two bright mirrors should be placed, one representing the sun in her hand, and the other representing the moon.
Outside Sera Monastery in Lhasa stands Zaki Temple;
She is also enshrined in various places.
Zashi Lhamo is a Dharma Protector. With sincere practice and prayer, in addition to sudden wealth, one also receives blessings of health, longevity, peace, and supreme auspiciousness. She also protects travelers. In other words, whenever you journey, She safeguards your safety. In fact, besides the Jaki Temple outside Sera Monastery in Lhasa, She is also venerated in Chengdu, Ningxia, Shenyang (at Falun Temple), and Daqing (at Zhengjie Temple).
The most important point in practicing Zashi Lhamo is this: She exists both in the human realm and in the heavenly realms.
