【Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Mahapratisara Background and Key Cultivation Formula】
Mahapratisara, Pratisara for short, is a transformation of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Mahapratisara is a deity in the court of Guanyin in the Garbhadhatu mandala of Vajrayana and has the Vajrayana name ''Wish Granting Vajra.''

Mahapratisara always fulfills the wishes of sentient beings. Whatever one wishes for, Mahapratisara provides it. Mahapratisara is therefore referred to as the ''Great Wish Fulfilling Bodhisattva.'' She is also known as the ''Great Vidyaraja'' because her foremost attribute is her manifestation of immense, brilliant, and glorious light. Although Mahapratisara is an unusual and extraordinary bodhisattva in both Sutrayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, very few people know of her.

The Pratisara Great Liberation Dharani expresses the most important merits of Mahapratisara. Chapter 3 of Pratisara Spiritual Responses records all kinds of spiritual responses from Mahapratisara. By hearing, chanting, reading, writing, or propagating the Mahapratisara Dharani, one earns the merits of passing through fire without getting burned, never able to be poisoned, subjugation of one's enemies, breaking out of confinement in prison, and never harmed by dragons and fishes. Consequently, one will have peace and happiness and not be subjected to hardships and difficulties by the king, etc.

Many of Mahapratisara's efficacious spiritual responses are recorded in the Mahapratisara Dharani Sutra of Universal Illumination Supreme Wish Fulfilling Mudra Unconquerable Vidyaraja. According to the sutra, in Kapila-Vastu, while Rahula was still in his mother Yashodhara's womb, she threw herself into a fiery pit. Because Rahula had the dharani in mind, he converted the fiery pit into a lotus pond. The sutra also states that the king of Magadha did not have sons. His wish was finally fulfilled after his wife wore this dharani sutra around her neck.

The outstanding attribute of Mahapratisara is her enormous, intensely brilliant, and exceedingly beautiful light. Mahapratisara is an extraordinarily magnificent deity in both the Sutrayana and Vajrayana traditions of Buddhism. One can pray to either Mahapratisara or Amoghapasa because both will fulfill one's wishes.

Mahapratisara is called the Great Fulfiller of Wishes because she is a bodhisattva who always fulfills wishes. Although the teaching of the Buddhadharma is in essence ''seeking nothing'' and ''without desires,'' this bodhisattva, out of compassion, still fulfills the desires and wishes of sentient beings. As fulfilling wishes is the compassionate vow of this bodhisattva, she is called the Great Fulfiller of Wishes.

All worldly beings have wishes and desires. This common denominator is shared by all people. It is just human nature. Out of compassion for sentient beings, Mahapratisara fulfills their wishes. Upon attaining spiritual response from Mahapratisara, one's faith in the Buddhadharma will be strengthened and one will highly respect and venerate Guanyin Bodhisattva. For this reason, Mahapratisara manifests.

Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu specially transmitted the ''Eight Mudras of Mahapratisara'' - Inner Five-pronged Mudra, Kalachakra Mudra, Yamantaka Mudra, Ushnishavijaya Mudra, Three-pronged Mudra, Single-pronged Mudra, Akasagarbha Mudra, and Scripture Mudra. This is the key formula: After completing these eight mudras, one rubs one's hands together three times and claps three times. This causes Mahapratisara to immediately hear the sound of one's wishes. By rubbing one's hands together three times, one touches Mahapratisara's heart. Clapping three times causes Mahapratisara to immediately respond to one's prayers and wishes. Each time one prays to Mahapratisara one should form the mudra and recite ''Om。ma-ha-bo-la-di。sa-lao。so-ha。''.

Mahapratisara is not to be taken lightly. One shouldn't make prayers to her without careful consideration. Mahapratisara has tremendous power and can fulfill the wishes of sentient beings, so one must consider whether one's wishes are really suitable for oneself. Wishes to Mahapratisara should not be made lightly or without appropriate thoughtfulness. If one expects one's wishes to come true, one must sincerely abide by the precepts of Mahapratisara and Buddhism. By doing so one's wishes will come true. Mahapratisara eradicates the fears, karmic hindrances, and illnesses of sentient beings, creates tranquility in mind and body, and fulfills wishes. By reciting her mantra one gains the protection of gods, dragons, deities, and buddhas.

Living Buddha Lian-sheng teaches Mahapratisara dharma in hopes that, by having their wishes completely fulfilled, disciples will reach the state of ''seeking nothing'' and finally ''without desires.'' As a result, one will have accomplishment in cultivation and attain Buddhahood.
