Reference “Appendix III,” content related to Living Buddha Lian-sheng’s Discourse at Yuanxiang Chapter on the Ritual of Drawing a Talisman of Living Buddha Lian-sheng’s Book 116, The Yellow River.

There are three requirements for a talisman to be effective:

  1. The talisman is blessed by the light of buddhas and bodhisattvas.
  2. The person drawing the talisman must have power.
  3. The sincerity of the person seeking the talisman.
Concerning the person seeking the talisman, they must have bodhicitta, and wholeheartedly recite a buddha’s name, a mantra, or a sutra. The power of mantra or sutra recitation increases the blessings. If there are insufficient blessings, the talisman will be ineffective. In terms of the location for drawing the talisman, it should be done in front of a shrine as this is more dignified. In any case, most Buddhist activities must proceed according to prescribed rules, and this is especially true in Vajrayana.

Note: Method of consuming the water empowered by the talisman ashes: burn the talisman>mix the ashes with water>drink the water.
  1. After bathing oneself, prepare a clean bowl, a pair of chopsticks or some tongs, a lighter, and the talisman.
  2. Clasp the talisman from the top end with the chopsticks or the tongs. Ignite the talisman from the bottom end and burn it to ashes in a bowl (take care to not let the wind blow the talisman ashes away).
  3. Mix the talisman ashes with half cold and half hot water, then drink only the water.
