TBF-DA Prac-0013 Purification and Blessing Ritual Q&A I
HH Living Buddha Lian-sheng’s newly released Book 283, Thousands of Dharma Vessels, presents the vision of a Purification Hall and a ritual for purification and blessing. Readers asked Grandmaster several questions about this subject, and Grandmaster replied as follows:
Q1: Does the Purification and Blessing Ritual described in the book require empowerment by Grandmaster? Can this empowerment be remotely bestowed? A1: The Purification and Blessing Ritual requires empowerment by Root
Lineage Guru Living Buddha Lian-sheng. Yes, empowerment can be bestowed remotely. Grandmaster has not yet publicly transmitted empowerment for this ritual. However, to encourage recitation of the purification mantra, ordained Sangha and lay practitioners may request remote empowerment.
Q2: According to Book 283, ordained Sangha preside over the ritual. Are lay practitioners also permitted to preside? A2: Ordained or lay practitioners who have completed 100, 000 recitations of the 100 Syllable Mantra may preside over the ritual. Ordained Sangha should recite the long mantra while lay practitioners may recite the short mantra. Lay practitioners who meet this condition may perform the ritual for themselves and family members only.
Q3: Some practitioners have already completed 100,000 recitations of the long or short mantra. Prior to performing the ritual for purification of family members, are these practitioners required to perform an additional 100,000 recitations of the 100 Syllable Mantra for the purpose of purifying and blessing the broom? A3: The broom mentioned in Book 283 symbolizes a purifying implement. Every broom used in the ritual must be pre-blessed by 100,000 recitations of the 100 Hundred Syllable Mantra. This means that only a practitioner who has completed 100,000 recitations of the 100 Syllable Mantra possesses the qualification of performing mantra recitations and the visualization of Vajrasattva radiating light to bless the broom.
Practitioners who have previously performed 100,000 recitations of the 100 Syllable Mantra and wish to perform the Purification and Blessing Ritual on family members may, for enhancement, perform an additional 100,000 recitations. Therefore, practitioners are encouraged to diligently recite the 100 Syllable Mantra while waiting to obtain the broom. The practitioner can recite the long, short or heart 100 Syllable Mantra mentioned in the book 100,00 times. This is to increase the practitioner’s capability of blessing the broom.
◎The following warm reminders are especially important:
Do not rush to fulfill the count when reciting the 100 Syllable Mantra. One must concentrate, visualize, and single-mindedly recite the mantra. In this way, one’s mind is united with one’s recitation and one generates the merit of purifying the three secrets.
Ordained Sangha must recite the long mantra.
Q4: In the Purification and Blessing Ritual, when reciting a verse such as “First to sweep away afflictions. Second to sweep away bad luck. Third to sweep away karmic hindrances," can one recite in one’s native language? (For example, English, Indonesian, etc.)? A4: Yes. One may recite in a language other than Chinese.
Q5: Can the collective count of family members be counted as the 100,000 recitations? A5: To preside over the Purification and Blessing Ritual, this practitioner must have:
Received empowerment from Root Lineage Guru Living Buddha Lian-sheng.
Completed 100,000 recitations of the 100 Syllable Mantra.
A practitioner who has not completed 100,000 mantra recitations is not qualified to preside over the purification ritual. Practitioners should patiently complete the required mantra recitations. If the recitation is not complete, practitioner and family members should be purified by qualified ordained Sangha in a temple.
