Window Knocking Ghosts
Late in the evening on Oct. 15, 2022, I was sitting on my Dharma throne, performing bardo deliverance by thousands of Dharma vessels. It was so quiet that you could have heard a pin drop. At the time, I was halfway through my procedure. My Dharma throne was close to a glass window (floor-to-ceiling window).
At night, I usually keep my curtains closed. Then suddenly, knock, knock, knock! The noise was coming from the windows. I am not afraid of ghosts, but in the quiet of the late evening, who could be knocking on my floor-to-ceiling window?
Knock! Knock! Knock! Knock! Knock! Knock! Knock! The knocks were in rapid succession. I thought it might be a blind bird not yet back to its nest that had crashed into the window because it was too dark. However, the sound continuing on for a while made me think twice. Typically, a blind bird would just knock against the window a few times then fly away. It’s not possible for a bird to knock so rapidly over a period of time. Could it be a human? That seemed even more unlikely because my room is on the second floor and the glass door opens onto a balcony, which is one floor above ground level. Is any person that tall? Could it be dry branches from the pine tree sweeping down and brushing against the window? No, it couldn’t be that either.
I opened the curtains. There was a swishing sound, and it turned out that there was a horde of ghosts outside the window.
“Where did you come from?” I asked.
The ghost leader answered, “From Malang, Indonesia.”
“You came from all the way across the sea?”
“Indeed we did.”
“How many of you are there?”
“There are 127 of us.”
“Who told you that I perform bardo deliverance by thousands of Dharma vessels here?”
“Guanyin Bodhisattva of Malang Temple in Indonesia.”
Upon hearing they were introduced by Guanyin Bodhisattva, I opened the window without delay and let them in.
I counted the thousands of Dharma vessels and discovered that all the vessels were full except one. This vessel had exactly 127 open seats. Miraculous! This was truly ordained by heaven! I was busy with these 127 spirits for a while, and delivered all of them to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
One day I asked Hanifa, “Do you know what happened in Malang, Indonesia?”
Hanifa replied, “I checked my cell phone and found out about a football match that was held there. In over 20 years, Malang, Indonesia had never lost a match. But this time, they lost and a riot broke out. The police used tear gas, which caused chaos in the crowd, and people ran in all directions. 127 people died in the stampede.” (Hanifa is from Malang, Indonesia).
Ah! So they were accidental-death ghosts. 127 of them. Exactly 127.
Wow! How could it be so precise?
