【Pure Land Trinity Dharmalaksana Brief Introduction】

The Pure Land Trinity of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is comprised of Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva.

Amitabha holds a blossoming lotus, Avalokitesvara holds a purification vase and willow leaves, and Mahasthamaprapta holds a lotus bud. With his 48 great vows, Amitabha, also called Infinite Life Buddha and Infinite Light Buddha, has saved the most sentient beings. Avalokitesvara, the principal deity of compassion, is known for great compassion. Avalokitesvara saves suffering beings by hearing their prayers and appearing wherever prayers are made. Mahasthamaprapta is the principal deity of wisdom. These three deities are the principal deities of the Pure Land School.

The Pure Land practice is reciting the Buddha's name on a daily basis. When finished reciting Amitabha's name, one should chant the names of his attendants, Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta, because these two bodhisattvas are always by his side. This is an important point.

The two most important elements enabling one to be reborn in the pure land by chanting the Buddha's name are:
Accumulation of good fortune and merit, generation of bodhicitta, cultivation of the path of provisions, and benefitting sentient beings.
Focus and concentration.
One with these two key elements will definitely be reborn in the Western Pure Land. Concentration means keeping one's mind focused. Being single-minded is concentration.

How does one attain concentration? One must visualize Amitabha for one to three seconds while chanting the buddha's name. For these three seconds, one has no other thoughts. This is cessation and meditation. Afflictions and improper thoughts all cease. One then gradually increases the duration of cessation to 7 seconds, 10 seconds, and so on.

One practices concentration multiple times each day by visualizing the image of buddha and chanting the name of the buddha. In the future, when one's life is at end, through the power of having regularly recited the buddha's name with concentration, one will be instantly delivered to the Western Pure Land.

In Vajrayana, the principal deity of Light Transference of Consciousness Dharma in both the Six Dharmas of Naropa and the Six Doctrines of Niguma is Amitabha, a principal deity of deliverance.

The three root deities of Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu are Amitabha, the King of Buddhas; Golden Mother of the Jade Pond, the Queen of Immortals; and Ksitigarbha, the King of Earth. The affinity between the True Buddha School and the Pure Land Trinity is therefore deep and profound.
