【Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Vairocana Background and Magnificence】
The ''Great Sun Tathagata'' is called ''Vairocana'' in Sanskrit and is also referred to as the ''Universally-illuminating Vajra''which means ''great radiance pervading everywhere.'' He is the All-illuminating Great Sun or the All-encompassing Radiance.
The ''Vairocana'' is namely the great radiance which pervades and illuminates all the myriad phenomena of the entire universe without any hindrances or obstacles. Inwardly Vairocana shines through the absolute dharma realm without any hindrances. Outwardly, his radiance shines through all sentient beings.
Vairocana Buddha is the perfection of all virtues and his dharma-nature utterly transcends change and transformation. You can say that he is the collective dharma-nature of all deities and divinities and the ultimate perfection of them all. Vairocana is therefore the primary deity or ''Great Sun'' Lord of Vajrayana.
Living Buddha Lian-sheng Lu Sheng-yen knows another name for Vairocana which is unknown in this world: the ''Supreme All-pervading Eye Treasury Tathagata.''
The image of Vairocana in the mandala of the Vajradhatu is called ''Vairocana Wisdom Dharmakaya'' and his hands form the ''Wisdom Fist Mudra.''
The Garbhadhatu mandala expresses the ''principle'' meaning of Vairocana. He is therefore called the ''Principle'' Dharma-body of Vairocana and his mudra is the ''Dharmachakra Mudra.''
As for the image of Vairocana, he is always depicted as sitting, never standing. There is a deeper level of meaning for this. Because he is the ''Central Meditation Buddha,'' he is depicted in the midst of deep meditation.
Mahavairocana is the patriarch of Vajrayana. Of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, he is the most significant. Of the Five Wisdoms, the Wisdom of Ultimate Reality is most important. You can say that all of the Five Wisdoms are inherent in Mahavairocana. The Five Wisdoms emanate from Mahavairocana.
Mahavairocana's consort is Buddha Locani, the Great Auspicious Vajra Consort. Innocence Eye Tathagata, whom I previously wrote about, is also in fact Buddha Locani. This Buddha Mother is actually one and the same as Mahavairocana. As far as ''dual-body'' is concerned, the Buddha Mother represents wisdom whereas the principal deity (Buddha Father) represents expedient means. Where there is expedient means but wisdom is lacking, there will not be accomplishment. Therefore, the ''dual-body'' symbolizes both wisdom and expedient means. This is the meaning of it.
Vairocana is symbolized in three different ways:
''All-Pervading Illumination.'' This means that his radiance is all-pervading and penetrates every dharma realm without exception.
''All-Pervading Wisdom.'' His wisdom is the synthesis of all the wisdom in all the dharma realms. It is ''perfect and complete wisdom'' and ''all-pervading wisdom.''
The ''All-pervading Affliction Destroying.'' He can overcome and destroy all afflictions without exception.
His ''All-pervading'' therefore has three meanings: ''light,'' ''wisdom'' and ''destruction of all afflictions.''
Vairocana (Mahavairocana Buddha) has three bodies:
The dharma body - fills all dharma realms.
The Reward Body - exists in the Pure Land of Supreme Palace of the Vajra Dharma Realm in Mahesvara Heaven.
The Emanation Body - expedient myriad transformations in the six realms of samsara for all kinds of teaching.
The Vairocana is the Dharma Body, the Reward Body, and the Emanation Body. You can say that he is the mother of all buddhas. His body is white. He wears a Five Buddha Crown and white celestial garments with a matching multi-layered skirt. His hands form the Wisdom Fist mudra and the Turning the Wheel of Dharma mudra. It is he who turns all the dharma wheels and he is the ultimate perfection of wisdom.
His Vajradhatu mantra is ''Om。 bie-zha-da-du。fan。'' This means ''The Most Honored Supreme Wisdom Universally-illuminating Vajra Vairocana.''
In the Garbhadhatu his mantra is: ''Ah。e。la。hum。kan。'' which means ''earth, water, fire, wind, and void.''
His mantra in both the Vajradhatu and the Garbhadhatu is: ''Om。 bie-zha-da-du。fan。ah-wei-la-hum。kan。'' Living Buddha Lian-sheng thinks that everyone has been chanting it in this way: ''Ah-wei-la-hum。kan。'' or sometimes ''Ah-e-(pronounced in between Wei and e)-la-hum。kan。'' This is the correct pronunciation: ''Om。 bie-zha-da-du。fan。ah-e-la-hum。kan。''
As Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu has previously mentioned, in a previous life Living Buddha Lian-sheng was ''Padmakumara.''In Padmakumara's previous life, Padmakumara was ''Innocence Eye Tathagata.'' Another name for ''Innocence Eye Tathagata'' is ''Buddha Locani.'' Buddha Locani was originally the Great Auspicious Vajra Consort and is the emanation of Vairocana.
Living Buddha Lian-sheng has long known that he is born from the Great White Padmakumara of Maha Twin Lotus Ponds in the Western Pure Land of Utmost Bliss. He made a vow and was reborn in this world because he was entrusted by Amitabha Buddha. The true origin of Living Buddha Lian-sheng is: ''Vairocana.'' Vairocana emanated Buddha Locani. Maha Twin Lotus Ponds was transformed from the two eyes of Buddha Locani. ''Buddha Locani'' emanated ''Padmakumara'' and ''Padmakumara'' emanated ''Living Buddha Lian-sheng.''
The lineage is therefore: Vairocana- Buddha Locani-Padmakumara-Living Buddha Lian-sheng.
Mahavairocana discoursed both the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra. He is considered the patriarch of Vajrayana. In Vajrayana, the Vairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra, the two sutras of the Vajradhatu and Garbhadhatu, consider Vairocana Buddha to be the principal deity.
Mahavairocana is in both the Garbadhatu (Womb Realm) and the Vajradhatu (Diamond Realm.) The Garbhadhatu represents ''cause'' whereas the Vajradhatu represents ''result.'' The Garbhadhatu is the mandala of ''cause'' whereas the Vajradhatu is the mandala of the ''result.'' In other words, one cultivates both the mandala of ''cause'' and the mandala of ''result.'' Therefore, the deities in the Womb Realm are referred to as ''emanations of principles;'' deities in the Diamond Realm are referred to as ''emanations of knowledge.'' One is the cause, the other is the result. There is a difference between the two. These two are not the same thing.
I, Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu, have not only been to ''Mahesvara Heaven,'' but have also entered into the Supreme Palace of the Dharma Realm and met Vairocana personally.
Vairocana (Mahavairocana Buddha) is indeed preaching the dharma in the ''Mahesvara Heaven.''
The ''Mahesvara Heaven'' is not the 6th Heaven of the Desire Realm. It is the ''Seventh Non-returning Heaven,'' the highest level of the Desire Realm.
This ''Mahesvara Heaven'' is not, as most people think, the Heaven of Mara. It is actually a pure land transformed and manifested by Vairocana. The Supreme Palace of the Vajra Dharma Realm is in the pure land of the ''Mahesvara Heaven.''
All the bodhisattvas in this pure land are on the 10th level. These bodhisattvas are preparing to become buddhas.
The 10th level bodhisattvas in the ''Supreme Palace of Vajra Dharma Realm'' are listening to Vairocana preaching dharma.
