The Holy Mother of Heaven wears a Tongtian crown and a rosy cape. She holds a Jade tablet in front of her chest with both hands. Or, she may hold a Ruyi with her right hand while her left hand is on her knee (or a chair arm). The spirit of The Holy Mother of Heaven, (also referred to as “Matsu” or “Mazu”), can travel outside her body and save people everywhere. She subdued two evil spirits, one who was clairvoyant and the other clairaudient, and took them as her assistants. She displays extraordinary power and saves sentient beings throughout the oceans and seas.
Here is a story about the origin of the Holy Mother of Heaven. In China’s Fujian Province, on Meizhou Island in Putian, there was a clan of Lin. One generation of the Lin clan performed many virtuous deeds and frequently offered food to famine refugees. Among the refugees was a Taoist practitioner. After receiving food from the Lin clan for three years, he taught them how to improve the feng shui of their residence. From that time on, those with the surname Lin always passed the highest imperial examinations or imperial provincial examinations. Among them was the female saint, Lin Moniang.
After growing up, Lin Moniang encountered a Taoist named Xuan Tong Dao Chang who taught her a precious Taoist practice: “The Profound and Skillful Nine-Turn Practice”. After Lin Moniang had accomplished the cultivation of this practice, her spirit was able to travel outside her body. She also formed ties with Avalokiteshvara and Jade Pond Golder Mother. The Golden Mother introduced her to the Jade Emperor. She was then entitled The Empress of Heaven, the Holy Mother of Heaven, The Graceful Conduct Fair Lady, or, Matsu.
Why was “Mo” (Note: “Mo” means “silence” in Chinese) in her given name? It was because she did not talk at all when she was little. Most talkative people converse with boring, untruthful, delusive, mean, or gossipy words, which leads to speech karma. Therefore, the “Mo” in Lin Moniang’s name is extraordinary and exceptional. As long as she kept silent, she would not have any cause for negative speech karma. “Mo” is purity.
The background of the Holy Mother of Heaven is truly extraordinary. In fact, she descended from the Tusita Heaven of Maitreya. The Holy Mother of Heaven is not merely a goddess or a folk belief. She is at the same level as a Bodhisattva. Matsu has manifested numerous miracles. She is the “Goddess of Watery Regions”. Where there is water, there is her jurisdiction; this is why she is called the “Water Regions Goddess.” Her rank is extremely high and she also has abundant wealth.
In China, there are three saints: Confucius, the Literary Saint; Guangong, the Military Saint; and the Holy Mother of Heaven (also known as the Woman Saint or the Graceful Conduct Fair Lady) who manifests in China, Taiwan, and many other places all over the world. Not only do people in Taiwan believe in her, but also believers throughout the world respectfully regard her as a bodhisattva. In Vajrayana, the Holy Mother of Heaven sadhana does not exist. However, the Holy Mother of Heaven sadhana does exist in Taiwan. The Holy Mother of Heaven Sadhana originated from the True Buddha School.
Although the Holy Mother of Heaven is a “worldly” belief, we highly respect her because she is actually a great bodhisattva.
In Taichung, in addition to Hanxi Matsu, there is another Matsu in the Wanchun Temple on Chenggong Road. When I, Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu, was still a student I stopped by this temple and paid homage to Matsu while on my way to carry out a surveying assignment.
Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu once encountered the Holy Mother of Heaven. It happened in Kaohsiung when I was entering Fengbitou from Dalin for a survey. She appeared at the seaside. This true story has been described in Book 16, Encounter with the World of Spirits, Chapter 11 “A Teaching On The Way To Good Health At The Feng Lin Temple.”
