【Ushnishavijaya Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
Ushnishavijaya has three faces and eight arms, with three eyes on each face. The white face in the center which appears solemn and tranquil is Ushnishavijaya. The golden yellow face on the right side which smiles happily is Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The wrathful blue face on the left side is Vajrapani.

The body of Ushnishavijaya is as pure, bright, white, and flawless as the autumn moon. With the appearance of a young girl, she sits atop a moon disc on a lotus wearing celestial garments, a flower garland, a precious crown and a necklace of jewels. She appears solemn and kind and radiates pure and infinite white light.

Ushnishavijaya holds a different dharma implement in each of her eight hands. The first right hand holds a crossed vajra scepter in front of her chest. The second right hand holds an Amitabha that sits on a lotus seat. The third right hand holds an arrow and the fourth right hand forms the Wish-fulfilling Mudra above her right leg. The first left hand forms the Wrathful Fist Mudra and holds a silk lasso. The second left hand holds the Fearless Mudra up high. The third left hand holds a bow. The fourth left hand forms the Dhyana Mudra and holds a nectar vase.

【Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Ushnishavijaya Background and the Key Cultivation Formula】
Ushnishavijaya was emanated from Shakyamuni Buddha's ushnisha and is the emanation of the body, speech and mind of Shakyamuni Buddha. In other words, Ushnishavijaya is the bodhisattva transformed from the combined boundless light, infinite wisdom and immeasurable crown of Shakyamuni Buddha. For this reason, she is called ''Ushnisha''vijaya.

The ushnisha of Shakyamuni Buddha is the wisdom of Vairocana Buddha and the infinite light of Amitabha Buddha. This ushnisha represents the Tathagata's incomparable wisdom of emptiness and non-existence.
Ushnishavijaya is therefore the unity of three bodhisattvas, Guanyin Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, and Ushnishavijaya. This unity, which is the integration of wisdom, wrath, subjugation, and compassion, and a manifestation from the ushnisha of the Tathagata with great power, possesses not only a multitude of practices but also essence, attributes, and functions.

In the Buddhist scriptures, Ushnishavijaya is also called Vijaya. In Vajrayana, this deity is known as Demon Removing Vajra.

The three longevity deities of Vajrayana are Ushnishavijaya, Longevity Buddha, and White Tara. By cultivating the Ushnishavijaya Practice, one will have a long life, extend one's lifespan, gain the power of infinite merit, and benefit all sentient beings.

Ushnishavijaya's Magnificent Merits – –
  1. Eliminates all afflictions and karmic hindrances.
  2. Destroys all kinds of suffering of sentient beings in the evil realms.
  3. Enables sentient beings to receive the complete protection of all bodhisattvas. In one's lifetime, one will not be hindered by disease and afflictions.
  4. Her mantra can annihilate all the suffering of the hells, the realms of King Yama, and the animal realm. The merit of this mantra recitation can be dedicated for the virtuous realms.
  5. If one is fated to die young, one may live a long life.
  6. By reciting this mantra, one eliminates the accumulated transgressions and negative karma of millions of kalpas of lifetimes. Wherever one is reborn one will always encounter buddhas and achieve the highest bodhi. Upon shedding the physical body one will be reborn in the wonderful and marvelous buddha lands.
  7. By reciting this dharani, one utterly destroys and completely obliterates the suffering of the hells, the Animal Realm, the netherworld of Lord Yama, and the Realm of Hungry Ghosts.
Ushnishavijaya has eight arms and three faces. The center face, which is white, represents the eradication of all disasters; the right face is yellow and represents increasing good fortune; the left face is blue and represents the power of subjugation.

The first hand on the right holds a four-colored crossed vajra scepter, which represents the subjugation of demons and evil spirits and the eradication of all disasters and calamities.
The second right hand holds a lotus seat with an Amitabha Buddha on top. As Amitabha is Ushnishavijaya's guru, this represents love and respect.
The third right hand holds an arrow, symbolizing that Ushnishavijaya can attract the hearts of all sentient beings.
The fourth right hand holds the Wish-fulfilling Mudra, as Ushnishavijaya can fulfill all the wishes of sentient beings.

On the left side, the first left hand forms the Wrathful Mudra and holds a lasso. This subjugates all the sentient beings who are difficult to teach.
The second left hand is the Fearlessness Bestowing Mudra. This represents that all the fears of sentient beings will be dispelled.
The third left hand holds a bow, which represents the transcendence of the three realms.
The fourth left hand forms the Dhyana Mudra and holds a nectar vase. This represents that sentient beings will have a long life and be free from sickness and disease.

【Ushnishavijaya Mantra:】「Om。pu-long。so-ha。om。ah-mi-da。ah-yu-la。da-de。so-ha。」 means that she is emanated from the light of the ushnisha of the Tathagata. Ushnishavijaya embodies the complete perfection of the universe.

Each time we cultivate a practice we recite the Completion Mantra: ''Om。bu-lin。om。bu-lin.'' Actually, ''Om。bu-lin'' began to be pronounced in this way starting from the time this mantra was transmitted to Taiwan. In fact, the correct pronunciation should be ''Pu-long。om.''

The meaning of the mantra of Ushnishavijaya is attainment of the light of great accomplishment. This occurs when the light of one's mind merges with the perfect universal light emanating from the crown of the Tathagata.

The universe in its true form, the true form of Ushnishavijaya, is pure white light. Our own buddha nature is also pure white light, without distinction of purity and impurity. All the phenomena of the universe are perfect in this way. It is due to the thoughts of sentient beings that phenomena appear contaminated. So, by reciting the Ushnishavijaya Mantra, one brings forth one's own buddha nature and merges with the original pure dharmakaya buddha of the universe. In this way the entire universe is accomplished.

If one recites this mantra, all the suffering of the Hell Realm, the Animal Realm, the netherworld of Lord Yama, and the Hungry Ghost Realm will be completely obliterated without a trace. One will be reborn in the pure land, never in the three evil realms. Further, if one blesses some dirt by reciting the Ushnishavijaya Mantra over it 21 times and then spreads the dirt over a grave, the deceased person of that grave will ascend to heaven. This is how powerful the mantra is.

One may hang an inscription of the Ushnishavijaya Mantra on a plaque over the doorway of a house. Then, if one day some dust from the plaque with the Ushnishavijaya Mantra on it should fall on a person's head, that person will be reborn in the pure land. Another practice is to first bless some rice then scatter it outside for the birds to fly down and eat. The birds will be reborn in the pure land, and this practice will also eradicate all black magic.

The Ushnishavijaya stupa can suppress hurricanes, earthquakes, fire disasters and floods. Whether internal or external disasters of earth, water, fire or wind, all can be suppressed by Ushnishavijaya.

One forms the Ushnishavijaya Mudra by pressing the thumbs down on the index fingers of both hands, curving the index fingers inwards towards the palms while holding the palms together. The mudra forms a stupa, which represents the stupa of Ushnishavijaya. With the mantra, image, and mudra, one has the cultivation formula of the Ushnishavijaya Practice.
