Preface
Since discoursing the Vimalakirti Sutra in the middle of 2022, I have sensed Vimalakirti following me, inseparable.
I have discoursed scriptures and taught Buddhadharma for many years, but I’ve never experienced anything like this. Even if there had been such a phenomenon, it was only the blessings of buddhas and bodhisattvas.
This time it’s different. This time, Vimalakirti, the central figure of the Vimalakirti Sutra, stays with me like a shadow, advising me what to say and how to say it.
I asked Master Vimalakirti, "Where do you live?"
Vimalakirti answered, "I live in your mind."
"Mind cannot be found! What mind are you talking about?"
"I live in your pores."
"How can your large body fit into my pores?”
"If you don't believe me, see for yourself!"
Upon taking a closer look at my pores, I was shocked. It turned out a tiny figure really was moving about in there.
The figure said, "I am Vimalakirti."
I asked, "You live in just one pore?"
"Look carefully at all the pores."
Oh, my goodness!
A Vimalakīrti resided in every pore. Just as there are countless pores in my body, there were also countless Vimalakīrtis.
I asked, "Do you reside anywhere other than my body?”
Master Vimalakīrti replied, "I am omnipresent, that is, I live everywhere. If you don't believe me, look at the sky."
I looked up.
Good heavens!
Vimalakirti’s face filled the entire sky.
I asked, "You are from the era of Buddha Shakyamuni. How can you appear in modern times?"
Vimalakirti answered, "Is Shakyamuni Buddha here?"
"Yes, he is."
"Just as Buddha Shakyamuni is present, I, Vimalakirti, am also present"
I was at a loss for words.
Vimalakirti continued, "Quantity, beyond measurement."
"What does that mean?" I asked.
Vimalakirti answered, "I am infinite life, and beyond infinite life."
Readers, pay attention. This book transcends ordinary thinking. Its meaning can only be intuited.
