【Sitatapatra Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
Sitatapatra manifests in many forms; one face with two arms, three faces with six arms, thousand faces and thousand arms, etc.

White Sitatapatra with one face, two arms and three eyes holds a parasol in her left hand while her right hand forms the Wish-fulfilling Mudra. She sits in the lotus position on a lotus dais.

Sitatapatra with a thousand faces, thousand arms, thousand eyes, and thousand feet is also white. She is adorned with pearl garlands, necklaces of precious stones, and various ornaments. Her white center face has three eyes. The two left and two right faces are red, yellow, red, and green respectively. Each face has three eyes. On top of her front face are nine more tiers, each tier consisting of five faces from left to right. The left hand of the main two front arms holds a parasol in front of her chest while the right hand holds a dharma wheel (or vajra scepter.) The other hands hold respectively a bell, vajra scepter, dharma wheel, hook, lasso, bow, arrow, and many more implements. Together with the main hands, these hands form a circle around her like a thousand-spoke wheel. She is surrounded by raging fire on all sides.

The Buddha Mother is robed in celestial garments and multiple layers of skirts. She is of majestic appearance and adorned with hundreds of precious jewels. She stands authoritatively on her thousand feet, protecting all celestial beings and sentient beings beneath her dais.

【Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Discourse - Sitatapatra Background and Key Cultivation Formula】
Sitatapatra is the Vajra Ushnisha Boomerang Shield Buddha Mother. She has a thousand hands, faces, eyes, and feet. She is the omnipresent great white Buddha Mother who incomparably illuminates and manifests in many different forms. With her magnificent power, the Buddha Mother governs beings of three realms and radiates the brilliant light of protection over all sentient beings. As the white parasol is her samaya form, she is called Sitatapatra (Buddha Mother of the Great White Parasol.)

Sitatapatra is the Buddha Mother Shakyamuni Buddha manifested from the light of his supreme ushnisha and is highly revered in Tibetan Vajrayana. She is considered to have dharma power to protect from disasters and calamities equal to that of Ushnishavijaya and Thousand Arms Thousand Eyes Guanyin.

Sitatapatra originated as follows. During the war between Indra and Asura, Indra was defeated in battle and appealed to Shakyamuni Buddha for help. Shakyamuni Buddha then manifested Great White Invincible Buddha Mother with a thousand hands, arms and feet from his ushnisha. While Shakyamuni Buddha was reciting the Sitatapatra Dharani, Sitatapatra used her parasol to completely shield Indra and boomerang the Asuras. This repelled the attack of the Asuras and brought an end to the war.

The power of Sitatapatra is indestructible and invincible. She is so invincible that she was even able to defeat the strongest and most powerful Asura King. Because her power is infinite, she is called Invincible. The power of Sitatapatra is such that she will cause all enemies and evil spirits to retreat and will destroy all black magic and evil spells. She can increase one's lifespan through Amitabha Buddha, destroy the three demons of the sky, earth, and water, and cure any sickness. She is able to end affliction by ghosts in dreams and in real life.

It is written in the sutras that Sitatapatra is the dharma protector or mother dharma protector of all buddhas and bodhisattvas. Due to her protection, countless buddhas emerged. The most notable feature of Sitatapatra is her boomerang shield. What is meant by ''boomerang shield?'' ''Boomerang'' means that no matter how great the dharma power cast out, one can return it to its source. What is meant by ''shield?'' To ''shield'' means that no matter how strong the power, Sitatapatra is able to shield one from it. In the event of attack by an evil spell or black magic, one will not be harmed by it as long as one has cultivated Sitatapatra Buddha Mother Dharma and gained the protection of Sitatapatra. Once beneath the parasol of Sitatapatra, one will not be harmed by evil sorcery or black magic. Not only that, ghosts and evil spirits will be unable harm one. Sitatapatra is called Boomerang Shield Mother because her boomerang shield is her most important feature.

Up to now I have been reluctant to transmit the Boomerang Shield Mantra because this mantra is supposed to be kept secret. Actually, the Boomerang Shield Mantra is the Sitatapatra Mantra in reverse: ''ha-so。 ni-hum。 ma-ma 。hum。'' If one knows and uses the Sitatapatra Boomerang Shield Mantra, one's enemy will suffer injury. If one does not use the Boomerang Shield Mantra, one will only protect and shield oneself, that is, the dharma power of one's enemy will not boomerang to its source. In the event of attack by black magic and evil sorcery, one should pray to Sitatapatra to shield one with her great white parasol. Thereafter, upon one reciting the Boomerang Shield Mantra, the one who cast the evil sorcery or black magic will be immediately overthrown.

Sitatapatra, Thousand-armed-thousand-eyed Guanyin, Hayagriva, Ushnishavijaya, and Simhamukha are the five deities who have the Boomerang Shield Mantra. Other than these, one should not use any boomerang shield mantras. Kalachakra and some of the vajra deities also have the Boomerang Shield Mantra.

One may use a simplified visualization of Sitatapatra. Visualize a white Buddha Mother holding a great white parasol while forming the Wish-fulfilling Mudra with her right hand. She has one head and two arms, although one may also find Sitatapatra with three heads and six arms. There is also a thousand-hands-thousand heads-thousand-feet Sitatapatra who is transformed from the white light of Shakyamuni Buddha's ushnisha. Now that one has her image, mudra, and mantra ''hum。 ma-ma。hum-ni。so-ha,'' one may proceed to cultivate the personal deity sadhana.

In the Sitatapatra Armor Mantra, the word armor means ''parasol,'' like an impenetrable shell. ''Hum。 ma-ma。hum-ni。 so-ha'' is the most secret practice of Vajrayana. This practice can be used for calamity eradication, enrichment, harmonization, and subjugation. Moreover, it protects one's homeland, defeats one's most powerful enemies, and prevents disasters of earth, water, fire, wind, and space.

By cultivating Sitatapatra dharma, one gains the affection and support of the sun, moon and stars, auspiciousness, and blessing. If one upholds the practice, recites the mantra, makes offerings, and wears an image of the deity at all times, one will increase all kinds of merit. Upon death, one will be reborn in the pure land and will never again fall into the six realms of samsara.

In cultivating the Sitatapatra Boundary Protection Practice one may visualize Sitatapatra appearing in empty space and using her vajra canopy to repel and subdue all evil practices so that none will attach to one's body. One thereby avoids all misfortune, that is, everything bad and evil will be shielded and boomeranged. Sitatapatra is a principal deity for subjugation of black magic, evil spirits, demons, and even Asuras. There will be no evil karma in one's life.

One may cultivate Sitatapatra when sick. Her brilliant light will eliminate all karmic causes of the sickness thus restoring body and mind to a state of peace and happiness.

The two primary translated sutras in connection with cultivation of Sitatapatra practice are the Dharani Sutra of the Buddha Ushnisha Sitatapatra and the Discourse of the Buddha on the Sitatapatra Dharani Sutra.
