The appearance of Surupakaya Tathagata is similar to Amitabha Buddha. He wears kasaya and sits in the lotus position upon a thousand-petaled lotus seat. He looks compassionately upon sentient beings. Both his palms face outward with all fingers straight up except that the right thumb and the right index finger form a circle.
【Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Surupakaya Tathagata Background and Magnificence】
Surupakaya Tathagata is one of the seven Tathagatas of Yogacara Ulkamukha. Every time the Yogacara Ulkamukha is performed the seven Tathagatas must be praised and we must invite them for their blessing.
The very first Tathagata to invite is Namo Ratnaketu Tathagata. When sentient beings hear the name of Ratnaketu Tathagata, the fires of their evil karma which is the result of defilements by afflictions will be eradicated. Virtuous male and female beings who practice the Bodhisattva Vehicle, who hear the name of Ratnaketu Tathagata who is worthy of offerings and is in the state of unexcelled Perfect Enlightenment, and who are able to accept, recite and embrace the name of Ratnaketu Tathagata will receive every kind of good fortune.
The second tathagata to be invited is Namo Abhayaṃkara. Sentient beings who hear the name of Abhayamkara will obtain peace and happiness. They will never live in fear or terror and will be pure and joyful. The blessings which come from reciting the name of Abhayamkara Tathagata free one from the ''hungry ghost'' realm and completely eradicate the terror caused by ghosts.
The next tathagata to invite is Namo Vipulakaya Tathagata. Upon hearing the name of Vipulakaya Tathagata, hungry ghosts' fire of their ''needle-thin throat'' evil karma will stop burning and cool down. They will be able to swallow food and the food will have the flavor of nectar. The blessings of reciting the name of Vipulakaya Tathagata widen the throats of Hungry Ghosts so they are able to consume as many offerings they desire until their hunger is satisfied.
The fourth tathagata to be invited is Namo Surupakaya Tathagata whose extraordinary qualities and dignity are unsurpassed in heaven and on earth.
Namo Prabhutaratna Tathagata is the fifth tathagata to invite. Sentient beings who hear the name of Prabhutaratna Tathagata will possess sufficient wealth, obtain whatever they wish for and need, and benefit from it infinitely. As for ghosts, the blessings of reciting the name of Prabhutaratna Tathagata can eradicate their evil karma of having been stingy in many past lives. As a result of reciting the name of Prabhutaratna Tathagata, ghosts will obtain good fortune, merit and perfection.
The six tathagata to invite is Namo Amitabha Buddha. Sentient beings who recite the name of Amitabha Buddha will be blessed with rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. They will be lotus born and enter the realm of non-retrogression.
The last tathagata to invite is Namo Worldly Vast Majestic Virtuous Unimpeded Light Tathagata. One will earn five merits by reciting his name. The first merit is that one will be unsurpassed throughout all worlds. Second, one will have the dignity and remarkable qualities of a Bodhisattva. Third, one's magnificence and virtue will be vast, just as the sun shines over the world reflecting on the wide ocean, and will surpass that of all the non-Buddhists and Deva-maras. One's merit is majestic. Fourth, one will be unimpeded and will accomplish whatever one wishes. One will be like a bird flying in the sky without hindrance. Fifth, one will attain perfectly firm and stable wisdom light. One's body and mind will be as bright and clear as a crystal ball.
Each tathagata has innumerable dharma powers. The dharma power which Surupakaya Tathagata is especially in charge of, however, is to maintain one's body in great health, make one's tone and complexion very wondrous, and to give one the appearance of a celestial being just as dignified and remarkable as Surupakaya himself. The dharma power of Surupakaya Tathagata is truly extraordinary.
A scripture says, ''Buddhists who hear the name of Surupakaya will not be ugly. All of their sense organs will be complete and fully functional. They will have a pleasing and perfect appearance. They will be the most extraordinary and dignified in heaven and the human realm. The blessing received from reciting the name of Surupakaya Tathagata can obliterate the ugly ghost form so one may obtain a perfect appearance.''
What kind of Tathagata is Surupakaya Tathagata?
He can put back together bodies that have been torn to pieces. Surupakaya Tathagata is needed to help restore the torn up body back to its original appearance and in a wonderful form. Hence the Tathagata's name is Surupakaya Tathagata. This is an important point. Without the help of Surupakaya Tathagata not only would their bardo bodies remain fragmented, their souls would also still be fragmented. As a result, they would be in a state of complete and utter disarray. Therefore it is necessary for Surupakaya Tathagata to be present at the Homa in order to restore their bodies one by one so that they can go through the homa fire to purify themselves and have a feast prior to being delivered to the Pure Land. Within the Yoga Flaming Mouth there are seven Tathagatas and each deity has his own area of responsibility. The duty of Surupakaya Tathagata is to renew and refine a being's form so that the soul can be reborn in the Buddhist Pure Land.
The transformations of Surupakaya Tathagata are infinite. Surupakaya Tathagata radiates the Seven Treasures Light on beings in the netherworld. After Surupakaya Tathagata radiates the Seven Treasures Light on them, the appearance of many beings in the hungry ghost, hell, or animal realms, whose bodies are inferior, incomplete, or handicapped, will be transformed into the solemn and dignified appearance of celestial beings. As a result, the beings in these lower realms are purified and are able to be delivered to a pure land. There are several different practical uses within Surupakaya Tathagata. From now on, when we need to perform significant bardo deliverance we must provide a tablet for Surupakaya Tathagata.
The right hand of Surupakaya Tathagata presents the Dharma-teaching Mudra, and the left hand, the Fearless Mudra. Both hands are held vertically in front of chest. This is the mudra of Surupakaya Tathagata. His mantra is ''Namo-su-lu-pa-ya, da-ta-ga-da-ya.''
The younger brother of Living Buddha Lian-sheng committed suicide. His ghost followed his mother when she came to the residence of Living Buddha Lian-sheng in America. One night he appeared three times and prayed to Living Buddha Lian-sheng to treat his ''throat.''
Living Buddha Lian-sheng applied the secret practice of Surupakaya Tathataga which enabled his younger brother, through the supplement of ''qi,'' to speak through his throat again. This method did cure him which was truly wonderful.
Once this story got out the whole netherworld knew my name. Many suicide ghosts came for treatment. My home turned into a clinic for suicide ghosts.
The ghosts who committed suicide by taking poison came for treatment of the viscera; by jumping off a building, for disabled limbs; by hanging, for throat; by carbon monoxide poisoning, for brain; by drowning, for lungs, etc.. (Note: The above true spiritual story was excerpted from A Clinic for Suicide Ghosts in Book 226, Open Your Heart to Faith, by Living Buddha Lian-sheng.)
