【Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
Golden Samantabhadra wears a crown with his right hand holding a lotus flower or Ruyi while his left hand forms the Wish-granting Mudra. Golden Samantabhadra may also wear a Five-buddha Crown with his hands forming mudras or holding vajra scepters while sitting in the half-lotus position on a white elephant with six tusks. (The six tusks represent Six Paramitas.)

【Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Background and Key Cultivation Formula】

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the Bodhisattva of great deeds. He rides a white elephant which has six tusks. He is the Dharma Prince transformed from tathagatas throughout kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. He has passed down the Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva uses the ear-consciousness to distinguish naturally. He is unhindered and his wisdom light radiates universally on all sentient beings. He is the supreme bodhisattva with ultimate perfect penetration and one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas.

In Eastern Esoteric Vajrayana Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the heart son of Mahavairocana and a Dharma Prince. Vajrasattva is a Dharma Prince of the Five Dhyani Buddhas and so is Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. In Sutrayana he is ''Samantabhadra Bodhisattva,'' while in Vajrayana he is Vajrasattva, Vajra Heart Bodhisattva, and Vajrapani. He is a truly great deity. All vajra deities are emanations of Samantabhadra.

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Manjushri are the attendants of Shakyamuni. Together, these three constitute the Avatamsaka Trinity. Manjushri is in charge of the ''wisdom gate'' while Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is in charge of the ''principle gate.''

Vajrasattva and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva are one and the same but with a different name. Because Samantabhadra Bodhisattva received empowerment from Vairocana, he holds a five-wisdom vajra scepter in each hand.

As time went on, all Acharyas who receive empowerment as ''masters entrusted to transmit Vajrayana,'' and who accomplish the ''Five Stages in Vairocana Buddhahood'' are considered to be the emanation body of Vajrasattva.

In the Diamond Realm, Vajrasattva is the 16th Bodhisattva. In Japanese Shingon Buddhism, Vajrasattva is the 2nd Patriarch following Vairocana, the 1st Patriarch.

When cultivating the Samantabhadra Bodhisattva practice, one first forms the mudra, then visualizes Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. One must remember that the visualized image is the Samantabhadra Bodhisattva of Vajrayana. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva holds a vajra sceptre in each hand because he has received the empowerment of Vairocana Buddha. In Vajrayana, some images of Samantabhadra depict him holding a vajra sceptre in each hand. This is how to visualize Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.

In Sutrayana, most images of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva show him with a golden body and depict him wearing a Five Buddha Crown. In his right hand he holds a lotus or a Ruyi, while his left hand forms the Wish-granting Mudra. He sits in the half-lotus position atop a white elephant with six tusks. By performing Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's practice once daily all one's karmic obstacles will be eliminated, one's merits will be perfect and complete, and one will be reborn in Amitabha Buddha's Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Since Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the Vajrasattva of Vajrayana, Samantabhadra and Vajrasattva are the principal masters of Sutrayana and Vajrayana respectively. Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the three times and ten directions consider Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Vajrasattva's merit in generating bodhicitta as the standard. Therefore, Amitabha is the master of the dharma gate.

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, the King of Great Vows, has ten great vows, which are respected by all Buddhist disciples.
1st vow: Homage to all buddhas: Pay homage to all buddhas.
2nd vow: Praising tathagatas: Praise all tathagatas. Praise their accomplishment of having reached the ultimate state. They are the most venerable! They are the tathagatas! They are the guardians of all sentient beings!
3rd vow: Widely engaging in making offerings.
Widely engage in fire offerings, in one's own personal offerings, and in Mandala offerings. Offerings are absolutely required.
4th vow: Repenting karmic transgressions.
We must repent our karmic transgressions daily. One knows of what one must repent. Whatever karmic transgressions one has made, one must repent them that very day.
5th vow: Rejoicing in taking part in meritorious deeds.
When one sees others performing meritorious deeds or charity, one rejoices and takes part in it.
6th vow: Supplicating those able to turn the dharma wheel. If there is one able to discourse the buddhadharma, or an excellent practitioner with ''authentic dharma,'' then one supplicate that person to turn the dharma wheel and request him to discourse the buddhadharma. This means supplicating such person to broadly save sentient beings.
7th vow: Supplicating buddhas to stay in the world. We must frequently supplicate the buddha to stay in the world.
8th vow: Consistently following buddhas to learn. One should associate with Buddhist disciples and learn the buddhadharma together. It would be wrong to cultivate for one day, stop cultivating for three days, then completely stop all cultivation. It is not permissible to practice once a month, once a week, or once every three days.
9th vow: Accommodating sentient beings always. This is extremely important. One accommodates sentient beings by teaching them expedient means. ''Accommodating sentient beings'' encompasses great learning within its meaning.
10th vow: Dedicating all merits universally. This is a very important point. The purpose of doing all these is to concentrate all into one dharma flow and arrive at the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The pure land of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. The Ten Great Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva never cease. The ''King of the Ten Great Vows'' does not reach an end even when the karmic hindrances and afflictions of sentient beings are completely exhausted. Therefore, no matter whether there are people in this world or not, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva will endure forever within the Ten Great Vows and in the vast entirety of the universe.

The Hizōki of the Japanese master Kobo Daishi explains that the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is identical to the Pure Land of Mysterious Adornment. Since Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the secret master of both Sutrayana and Vajrayana, it is through the power of his vows that all buddhas and bodhisattvas of three times and ten directions had the will to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and attain buddhahood. Therefore, as regards rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, there is no difference between Sutrayana and Vajrayana.

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the patriarch of the Pure Land Sect, which is a school of Buddhism. The principle of Pure Land practice is to chant the buddha's name and be reborn in the Pure Land.

In China, there are four famous mountains;
Mount Wutai, the cultivation venue of Manjushri, also called Mount Qingliang;
Mount Putuo, the cultivation venue of Avalokiteshvara;
Mount Jiuhua, the cultivation venue of Ksitigarbha; and
Mount Emei, the cultivation venue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva passed down to the world this well known Cautionary Verse:
''A day has passed and one's lifespan has grown shorter, like a fish in evaporating water. Where is the pleasure or happiness in life? Sentient beings! Be as diligent as if one is putting out a fire on one's head! Keep impermanence constantly in mind. Carefully avoid self-indulgence.''

Praise of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva: ''Great Bodhisattva, Great Dignity, Great Merit, Great Perfection, Great Spiritual Union, Great Lotus Flower, Great Power, Great Protection, Great Attainment, Great Prophet.''
