【Adversaries-Crushing Tara Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
Adversaries-Crushing Tara is the 7th Tara of the 21 Taras. She is also known as Enemy-Defeating Tara or Trad-Phat Tara [Tara with Trad and Phat sounds]. She saves sentient beings with great compassion, does not abide in the cycle of reincarnation, and is a lord who destroys demons and black magic. She is blazing with flames, severs the darkness of ignorance, and has incomparable merit and power to overcome all evil karmic causes.【Visualization of Adversaries-Crushing Tara Uncommon Practice】
Visualize her seed syllable 「
」 "du" appearing on a moon disc on a red lotus. The "du" syllable transforms into a black Tara. She wears a yellow cassock, and with her hair standing upwards, her appearance is wrathful.She has one face and four arms. The main right hand holds a Dharma wheel, and the second right hand, a sword. Her main left hand holds a lotus with a vajra scepter on it. The second left hand forms the Wrathful Mudra. Ratnasambhava Buddha is on her crown.

21 Tara Praise Verse: Adversaries-Crushing Tara
Praise Verse (1)
Homage to Tara who crushes adversaries
With the sounds of TRAT and PHAT
Subjugating with right leg bent and left leg outstretched
Topknot blazing brilliantly in flames of fire
Praise Verse (1) Explanation
The mantra of this wrathful Tara has the power to crush adversaries, such as disturbances caused by hungry ghosts, and annihilate obstacles to the attainment of absolute blissful bodhi.
This verse is praising Adversaries-Crushing Tara who sits in a pose of tranquility. Her right leg symbolizes the wisdom of emptiness, and her left leg, great compassion. With her two legs representing wisdom and emptiness, she subjugates the Three Realms. Her entire body is surrounded by fierce flames.
Although the outward appearance of this emanation of Tara is wrathful, symbolized by sitting amidst fierce flames, her essential nature is peaceful.

Homage to Tara who crushes black magic
With the sounds of TRAT and PHAT
Trampling adversaries with right leg bent and left leg outstretched
Blazing brightly in flames of fire
Praise verse (2) explanation:
This Tara is the lord of mantra practice and annihilates all demons and evil spirits. Her body is deep black or dark purple. If someone uses black magic against us by means of spells, or tries to inflict harm by cultivating ghosts or using illusory forms, we can pray to Tara with “TRAT” to return this black magic or any such adversaries back to the source. She tears apart evil and inauspiciousness with “PHAT”.
Her left leg outstretched and right leg bent is just an outer form. Inwardly, the bent right leg symbolizes emptiness, whereas the outstretched left leg symbolizes compassion; an alternate explanation is that the bent right leg symbolizes transcending reincarnation, whereas the outstretched left leg symbolizes saving sentient beings with great compassion. Altogether, the symbolization expresses that Tara reaches out to all sentient beings in the Three Worlds with compassion and the wisdom of emptiness, manifesting brilliant light to annihilate the darkness of ignorance. This is what is meant by the praise verse “Blazing brightly in flames of fire”.

Except from Dharma King Living Buddha Lian-sheng’s discourse on the Adversaries-Crushing Tara on Jan. 29, 2023.
By cultivating Adversaries-Crushing Tara Practice, one can attain both worldly and transcendental accomplishments. The two must be in perfect harmony.
Today, I will reveal a key cultivation formula: The reason we are in this human realm is to give, such as engage in charity, save sentient beings, offer material help, Dharma teaching, and protection from fear. All of those belong to the worldly compassionate bodhisattvas. When one learns the Chod Practice of Machig Labdron, one leaves the world, enters into emptiness, and reaches the state of nirvana. Upon entering nirvana, one accomplishes the true fruition of practice and attains Buddhahood.
While in the human realm, one practices to be a bodhisattva of the human realm. Once in the transcendental realm, one then becomes a buddha who saves sentient beings. This is of utmost importance. One must completely sever desire for money, sex, fame, food, and sleep. Greed, hatred, ignorance, doubt, and arrogance must also be completely severed. This is the Chod Practice of Machig Labdron. By cultivating Adversaries-crushing Tara Practice, one can attain both worldly and transcendental accomplishments. So today, while learning Buddhism, we should carry out giving in the world and simultaneously realize our tranquil Buddha-nature. Aoming Heaven is the pure land of the Taras.
Key Cultivation Formula: Adversaries-crushing Tara likes offerings in black color. Adversaries-crushing Tara is black. So remember, if you offer chocolate it must be dark chocolate. One may also offer black beans, black fruit, or black pomegranates. Is there such a thing as a black pomegranate? I don't think so. Black grapes, black seeds, black sesame seeds, all one’s offerings must be black. Because this Tara is black, one can easily get a response by making black offerings. This Tara likes everything that is black in color.
So, we have a black wrathful Tara, Machig Labdron. Her manifestation of a black wrathful Tara symbolizes Severance Practice (Chod). What is Severance Practice? One entirely severs worldly greed, hatred, ignorance, doubt, and arrogance. Riches, sex, fame, food, and sleep are also completely severed.
Note: Black color represents Chod, severance practice.
By severing everything, one enters into emptiness. The last word in the verse I wrote today for the Tara Shrine of Dayi Temple is “emptiness”. Actually, Tara also wants to teach us to attain Buddhahood. Severing everything and entering into emptiness is a supermundane practice by which one transcends the world. It’s not that we turn our backs on worldly dharma. It’s just that we must practice both worldly and world-transcending dharma. While in the mundane world, one accomplishes generous giving. At the same time, one also cultivates transcendental practices to realize Buddha-nature. This is of utmost importance.
