Golden Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva is dignified and perfect in appearance. He sits in the half-lotus position. His right hand forms the Bestowing or Fearless mudra while his left hand holds a Dharma banner. Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva eliminates all hindrances and subjugates all obstacles. He is a bodhisattva who eradicates all negative obstructions. He is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas of Buddhism, and the principal deity of the court of Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin in the Vajrayana Womb Realm mandala. His secret name is ''Away from Afflictions Vajra.''
He is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. When chanting High King Sutra, we will recite them, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Manjushri Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, and Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva. While Shakyamuni was alive, these eight bodhisattvas were his followers and always helped spread the Dharma. For this reason they are called the Eight Great Bodhisattvas.
Another reason they are called the Eight Great Bodhisattvas is because they practiced and cultivated during the same time period and reached attainment together. Although Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva's name comes last, he is really highly effective. He can subjugate afflictions, which is unusual, and he can also eradicate karmic hindrances, which is also unusual. Given these two abilities, we can say he is ''number one.''
Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva has illustrious power. This bodhisattva can subjugate afflictions and eradicate the karmic obstacles of sentient beings. This is why he is called ''Hindrance Removing Bodhisattva.''
The background of Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva is magnificent. In Vajrayana, there are the two divisions of Vajradhatu [Diamond Realm] and Garbhadhatu [Womb Realm]. The Vajradhatu means that the fruit of Buddhahood has been accomplished. It is the realm of attainment. Whereas Vajradhatu refers to the realm of attainment, Garbhadhatu refers to the realm of cause. In the Garbhadhatu Mandala, there is a court specially dedicated to Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin called the Court of Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin.
The Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Court is located at the eighth court of the thirteen courts in the Womb Realm mandala. He is the central deity surrounded by eight bodhisattvas:
- Doubts Elimination Bodhisattva
- Bestowing Fearlessly Bodhisattva
- Evil Elimination Bodhisattva
- Mind and Wisdom Purification Bodhisattva
- Compassion Bodhisattva
- Kindness Bodhisattva
- Stress Removal Bodhisattva
- Transcendental Wisdom Bodhisattva
Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin symbolizes radiant clear light. His primary function is to remove one's afflictions and karmic obstacles. He can also eliminate troubles and worries, negative karmic forces, the cycle of life and death, and obstructions to wisdom. He will continue to save sentient beings from the suffering of afflictions until they reach liberation. When people chant the name of Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin with a pure heart and mind they will expand their virtue and wisdom. All contamination will be purified and they will reach ultimate purification. Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin can fulfill the wishes of sentient beings and make them tranquil and fearless.
The Sutra of the Eight Great Bodhisattva Mandalas says, ''Virtuous men have eight mandalas which bear the profound essence of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. If sentient beings build these eight mandalas just one time, their ten unwholesome forms of behavior and five heinous crimes will be completely eliminated. They will be able to accomplish their pursuit of all kinds of benefits and excellent aspirations.''
Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin has three different images. The first is the white Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva which we see today, and there is also a yellow Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva. Grand Master is wearing yellow today, yellow Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva. There is also a blue Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva. There are altogether three different colors of Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva. The white Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva is for relief of calamities, the yellow Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva is for sufficient provisions, and the blue Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva is for subjugation of enemies. We can see from these three colors that Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin Bodhisattva's Dharma power is truly far-reaching and illustrious.
Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin's appearance is similar to that of all other bodhisattvas. All bodhisattvas have the same face. Whether it is the Seven Buddhas or the trillion buddhas, they all have the same face. So when visualizing, visualize the face of a bodhisattva.
He has two symbols. He holds a Dharma banner. A lotus is on top of the banner. On top of the lotus there are rays of light symbolizing a sun disc. Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin is usually depicted with either the Bestowing Mudra or Fearless Mudra. He wears a Five-Buddha Crown. His appearance is very dignified.
His seed syllable ''ah'' which can be white, yellow or blue.
His mudra is to bend without interlocking the little and ring fingers and touch them together. Press against the ring fingers with each thumb. Straighten the index and middle fingers and keep them touching.
His mantra is ''Om。na-sa-la-ya。so-ha。'' This is the deity's heart mantra. With the mantra, mudra, and image, we have the three primary elements needed for tantric cultivation. A sadhana can be established for cultivation by following the Vajrayana practice of visualizing the image, forming the mudra, and chanting the mantra. (We must include the invocation of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas in the sadhana because Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas.)
